The mission of the Newtown Creek Coalition is “To improve, protect and preserve Newtown Creek and to encourage appropriate use of this natural and historic resource by the community.” In practice, this means the execution of the following goals:
- Provide opportunities for discussion and interaction among many diverse groups related to the improvement of the watershed resources and its riparian areas.
- Foster a sense of connectivity to the creek.
- Boost awareness of the creek as a special community place, including its importance in the historical development of the Newtown area.
- Provide more focused attention to improving the degraded areas along the creek.
- Garner active private landowner stewardship of streamside property.
- Develop active involvement of the business community to increase viability of the creek as an amenity to attract visitors to the business corridor.
- Create a specific plan to preserve existing open space along the creek.
- Develop recommendations for improved management of existing lands to improve water quality and stormwater management.
The Newtown Creek Coalition works with Newtown Borough and Newtown Township to achieve these goals by coordinating on studies and data collection, sharing resources, and coordinating on public works.
